Example rates

California
7.25% statewide base rate. Local district taxes add more in most areas.
Texas
6.25% state rate. Local taxes can add up to 2%, for a combined rate of up to 8.25%.
Florida
6% state rate. Many counties add a discretionary sales surtax.
New York
4% state rate. New York City’s combined rate is 8.875%.

Checked on 18 October 2026 with the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration, the Texas Comptroller, the Florida Department of Revenue, the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance and NYC311. Rates change, so confirm yours before you invoice.

How to find your exact rate

Your combined rate is the state rate plus any county, city and special district rates for the place the sale happens. Most state revenue departments have a lookup that gives the rate for an address. Open Build your rate from its parts in the calculator to add the pieces together.

Some states have no statewide sales tax, and in many states plenty of services are not taxed at all. Whether a sale is taxed depends on what you sell and where, so check your state’s rules before you add tax to an invoice.

Backing sales tax out of a total

If a customer paid a total that already includes tax, divide it by 1 plus the rate. At 8.25%, a $108.25 total divided by 1.0825 is $100.00 before tax, with $8.25 of sales tax.

The calculator does this to the cent and shows the working, so you can match it against a receipt or a card statement.

Questions

Good to know

How do I calculate sales tax backwards from a total?

Divide the total by 1 plus the rate as a decimal. For $53.50 at 7%, $53.50 ÷ 1.07 = $50.00 before tax, and the sales tax is $3.50.

Why is there no single US sales tax rate?

Sales tax is set by each state, and counties, cities and special districts can add their own. Two addresses in one state can have different combined rates.

Do I charge sales tax on services?

It depends on the state and the service. Many states tax only some services, so check with your state revenue department for what you sell.

Are the example rates the full rate I should charge?

Not always. State rates leave out county and city taxes. New York City’s 8.875% is a combined rate. Always confirm the rate for the address of the sale.

Does this calculator send my numbers anywhere?

No. It runs in your browser. Copy link keeps the numbers after a # in the address, which is never sent to a server.
