Taking VAT out of a gross price
To find the VAT inside a price that already includes it, multiply by the rate and divide by 100 plus the rate. That is the VAT fraction.
At 20% the fraction is 20/120, or one sixth: £120 ÷ 6 = £20 VAT. At 5% it is 5/105, or one twenty first. At Ireland’s 23% it is 23/123. At 15% in South Africa it is 15/115, or 3/23. At 5% in the UAE it is one twenty first.
Zero rated is not the same as exempt
A zero rated sale is still a taxable sale. It is charged at 0%, so the VAT line shows nothing, but it still counts as a sale you have made. An exempt sale has no VAT at all and is treated differently on a VAT return. The calculator shows 0% for zero rated items. If what you sell might be exempt, check with your tax office.
From the VAT calculator to an invoice
Put it on an invoice adds the net price to the free invoice maker with the same VAT rate, where you can mix rates line by line. UK invoices carry your VAT number, and the maker labels it for you when you choose the United Kingdom.
Good to know
How do I remove 20% VAT from a price?
Divide the gross price by 1.2 to get the net price, or divide it by 6 to get the VAT. For £240, the VAT is £40 and the net price is £200.
Which Irish VAT rate should I use?
It depends on the goods or services. Revenue.ie lists the rate for each, for example 23% for most services and 13.5% for some building work. The calculator offers every current rate.
What is the VAT rate in the UAE and South Africa?
The standard rate is 5% in the UAE and 15% in South Africa, checked in October 2026 with each tax authority. Both also have a 0% zero rate for some supplies.
Can I use a different VAT rate?
Yes. Choose Other or Custom and type any rate, such as 21% or 25%. Results round to the penny or cent.
Is anything I type stored?
No. The calculator runs in your browser. Copy link keeps the numbers after a # in the address, which browsers do not send to websites.
